MUSIC CAMPS

ESYO encourages members to continue their music education during the summer. The following list contains a few of many, many summer music camps and is intended to give an idea of the range of programs available. Links to other programs can be found by entering "summer music camps" in the search engine on your computer. Inclusion in this list in no way constitutes an endorsement of particular programs.

Alfred University Summer Institute for Double Reed Players This exciting residential institute offers a special opportunity for high school oboe and bassoon students to work on improving their technique, musicianship, and reed-making skills. www.alfred.edu

Boston University Tanglewood Institute – The Institute, located in Lenox, Massachusetts, is recognized internationally for its outstanding opportunities for young artists of high school age from around the world. Workshops, programs and seminars are led by members of the Boston University School of Music faculty and members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, whose summer home is at Tanglewood. Opportunities include: Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Vocal Program, Composition, Harp Seminar, Quartet and Piano Programs, etc. www.bu.edu/cfa/music/tanglewood

Crane Youth Music Camp: Instrumental The CYM staff includes Crane School of Music (SUNY Potsdam) faculty and guest artists/teachers. Opportunities include performances, music theory and aural skills as well as participation in sectionals, chamber music groups, the full orchestra or band, individual lessons, and coaching. www.potsdam.edu/CRANE/CYM/

College of Saint Rose Summer Jazz - The Saint Rose Summer Jazz Program provides musicians in grades 7 – 12 the opportunity to continue developing their musical skills throughout the summer and provides them with valuable performance opportunities. The program is comprised of two 18-piece bands—one band is for students going into grades 7 – 9 and one band is for students going into grades 10 – 12.

Eastern US Music Camp This well-balanced program is held at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. Young people pursue musical studies through individual, class, and group instruction; they perform a wide range of instrumental and choral works in ensemble and concert. David Beck, Conductor of the Empire State Repertory Orchestra, is on the staff of this camp. www.easternusmusiccamp.com

Greenwood Music Camp – This summer camp for classical musicians in Northampton, MA has a 5-week "Senior Session" for ages 13-18 and a 2-week "Junior Session" for ages 10-13. The camp maintains a balance of string, woodwind, and piano players; all students participate in chamber music, orchestra, and chorus. www.greenwoodmusiccamp.org/

Hartwick College Summer Music Festival and Institute This program in Oneonta, NY offers opportunities in band, choral music, orchestra, jazz, music theatre, piano, guitar, and chamber music for students. It presents students with the chance to study, perform, attend cultural productions, and meet new people in a beautiful college setting. www.summeroncampus.com

Kinhaven Music School – Located in Weston, VT, this coed residential arts program was established in 1952. For ages 10 through 18, it focuses on chamber music. www.kinhaven.org

Luzerne Music Center This summer camp is located in the foothills of the Adirondacks in the town of Lake Luzerne, New York. Members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, which is in summer residence near-by at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, participate as teachers and as performers in the music center's chamber music concert series. www.luzernemusic.org

NY State Summer School of the Arts (NYSSA) School of Orchestral Studies This 4-week program, located in Saratoga Springs, offers the opportunity to work side by side with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and to work as a member of a full symphonic orchestra, a string orchestra, a wind ensemble, and a number of other smaller ensembles. NY State Summer School of the Arts (NYSSA) - Summer Jazz Institute - a two week program for serious jazz students features concerts by its own faculty sextet and by visiting artists like Chucho Valdes, Ray Brown, Stefon Harris, Jackie McLean, Joe Lovano, Slide Hampton, Nicholas Payton, Jacky Terrasson, and Clary Terry. Students and the Institute's faculty give public concerts (standing room only) during the program.

Signature Band and Choir Camp This camp is held on the picturesque campus of Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY and is dedicated to helping campers develop independence, friendships, and musical talent. The mission of the Signature Band and Choir Camp is to create an affirming and non-competitive musical community. Its programs are tailored to suit specific age groups. www.signaturemusic.org
